HELLO FAMILIES 🙂
I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend and were able to stay warm in the chilly temperatures! This week in 4th grade we have been very busy working on projects, working in partners and groups to develop our co-operation skills and getting feedback on our work to make improvements.
On Monday each table group took part in a powerful learning activity. Each “ecosystem” table group came up with an idea of what external influence had affected the habitats within the ecosystem, then they physically showed what it had done to the ecosystem and explained to the class.
Students then reflected on the experience for homework and shared their thoughts in class the next day. Many reflections showed how meaningful and moving this experience was.
In pairs students gave feedback on persuasive essay planning, and the persuasive RAFT project to give their partners ideas on how they could improve their work.
In math students have been solving problems to think more critically, and to deepen their understanding.
THIS WEEK’S CURRICULUM
We will continue to make inferences in our reading to improve our reading comprehension.
We will continue with our measurement unit this week by completing a real world project where students will put their area and perimeter knowledge to use.
UNIT OF INQUIRY
Students will present their RAFT project early this week and will reflect on their understanding of this unit’s central idea, “external influences affect the function of a habitat”. This will be the end of our Habitat unit, but we will still continue to discuss how we can take action in our school and community to help protect habitats. I am hoping that we will start planning an environmental service project before Chinese New Year break.
