OVERVIEW OF Shanghai COVID-19 RETURN TO SCHOOL GUIDELINES

Throughout this document, reference is made to "fever" and/or "COVID-19 symptoms." In accordance with Chinese regulations, a "fever" is a body temperature of ≥ 37.3 degrees Celsius.

"COVID-19 symptoms"

    • Dry cough
    • Fatigue
    • Difficulty breathing

Other symptoms may include:

    • Sore throat
    • Body aches
    • Diarrhea and/or nausea.

Online Temperature Record

Parents will be required to complete and submit an online form for each child before the student is permitted to return to school. This form will be used to record a student’s temperature for 5 consecutive calendar days before their return to campus. The form must be completed 5 separate times. A link to the form can be found here:

The form will also be emailed to parents prior to the campus re-opening date. Additionally, necessary criteria for returning to campus is outlined below

Health Card

  • Parents must take their child’s temperature daily, complete the paper health card, and send it to school with their child each day.
  • Students may not enter the bus (bus riders) or campus (walkers/bike riders) without a health card. This health card will be checked by bus Ayi monitors
  • Health cards will be different colors for different divisions and collected upon entry to campus.

 

*If a printer is not available, a handwritten note with temperature and health status is acceptable ONLY for the first day the student returns to school.

  • All students will show their Shanghai Green QR code from either Alipay or HealthCloud (pictured above).
  • Students may use their parent's QR code.
  • Bus riders will show the QR codes to the bus Ayi before entering the bus while bike riders and/or walkers will show their QR codes at the school gate.

SCHOOL BUS PROTOCOLS

In order to maintain a safe and healthy environment while on the school bus, the following protocols must be followed:

The bus driver and bus monitor (ayi) must:

  • Be free of a fever and/or COVID-19 symptoms and must wear face mask/covering and gloves at all times.
  • Present Shanghai Green QR Code to school and bus company prior to morning pick-ups
  • Clean and disinfect the bus in the morning and afternoon before pick-up and after drop-off
  • Keep the bus windows open for proper ventilation, weather permitting
  • Check for student Shanghai Green QR Code, temperatures and issue hand sanitizer

Students must:

  • Line up at the bus stop, keeping a distance of 1 meter between each student
  • Wear a face mask/covering at all times before, during and after the bus ride
  • Show the following to the bus ayi prior to boarding.
    • Shanghai Green QR Code or that of their parent/guardian*
    • Daily Health Form*

*Students who do not have both requirements will not be allowed on the bus.

  • Have a temperature of < 37.3 degrees (those with temperatures ≥37.3 degrees will not be permitted to board the bus)
  • Sanitize their hands before entering the bus
  • Sit in designated seat with physical distancing taken into consideration and family members seated together.
  • Disembark the bus upon arrival and proceed  through the established building entry process

GENERAL HEALTH AND HYGIENE PROTOCOLS

Many of the following health and hygiene habits represent best practices even in normal times but they are especially important during times in which we work together to control the spread of disease, including the COVID-19.

  • Masks, gloves, protective clothing, hand sanitizer, disinfectant, hand-washing facilities will be provided at various locations around campus.
    • (Clinic, Isolation station, Quarantine station, other areas designated by campus)
    • Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the building

Hand Washing/Sanitizer

Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and as often as possible, but always:

  • All staff and students wash/sanitize hands as they enter campus and between transitions.
  • After using the toilet.
  • Before and after eating.
  • After sneezing or coughing or using a tissue.
  • After contact with garbage or a high exposure area such as a door handle, bannister, elevator buttons

Before leaving for school and as soon as you get home from school

Students and Faculty are asked to pay attention to the following guidelines:

  • Come to school with at least two protective masks per day.
  • Do not share food or drinks
  • Always have a personal water bottle that you clean thoroughly each day with soap and water.
  • Use disposable alcohol wipes to clean your cell phones and laptops.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow or a tissue if you need to cough or sneeze.
  • Tissues and masks should be disposed of properly. Masks should be disposed of in the red waste bins.
  • No spitting within the school building or grounds.
  • As much as possible, always practice physical distancing (1 meter between you and the people around you).

 

  • Students receive daily instruction on the health and safety guidelines including handwashing, social distancing norms and transition safety that is age appropriate.
  • There will be identified disposal areas for masks (red bins) when necessary.
  • Doors and windows for each classroom will remain open during the day.

Campus Entry & Registration Protocol

Students Entry Into Campus

  • Students arriving by SCIS bus will have filled out their Daily Health Card and presented their Shanghai QR code to board the bus.
  • Upon entry into campus, students will be dropped off at the west doors near the uniform shop.
  • Students who do not ride the SCIS school bus will have their temperature checked upon arrival at the school gate after 7:30. Students should proceed along the roped pathway to the Receiving Area near the west doors (the uniform shop).

Prior to entering campus Students must show the guard their personal Green Health Code or that of their parent or guardian.   Then, the student proceeds toward the Receiving Area on the west side of campus near the uniform shop to have their temperature checked and sanitize their hands.

Unfortunately, due to SEC regulations, no outside visitors are allowed on campus. This includes parents.

  • Nurse 1 will be present at the door with the LS and US secretaries
  • Students will be required to drop off their “Daily Health Card” in the appropriate basket
  • Everyone will be asked to pause at the top of the steps to check their temperature

If the temperature is within the normal range, they will be invited inside the building where they can sanitize their hands. Masks should be worn throughout the day.

If the temperature is above 37.2º, the student will be directed down the ramp to the “Isolation Tent”

  • Nurse 2 will receive the student (or staff member) for a second temperature check and observation.
    • If, after 5 minutes, the temperature is 37.2º or below then the person will be sent back to the Receiving Area for proper entry into the building.
    • If, after the prescribed rest period, the temperature is still above 37.2º:
      • If a student:
        • Their parents will be called.
        • Parents will be given 1 hour to pick up the student in a private vehicle.
        • Students will not be allowed to leave on their own.
        • Parents will take the student to the Fever Clinic.
        • If parents cannot be contacted or cannot pick up the student within 1 hour then the school will call the CDC to pick up the student and a member of the school’s Health Team will accompany the student.

After Entering the Building Entry - Students Will

  • Students should follow the one-meter physical distancing markers.  Students should avoid creating congestion of space while waiting to enter.
  • Students will proceed to the hand sanitizing stations.

DURING THE SCHOOL DAY PROTOCOLS

Pre-Lunch/Afternoon Protocol

  • Students will complete a pre-lunch temperature check.
  • Any person with a temperature reading of 37.3 or higher will be immediately escorted to the Quarantine Tent for an additional temperature check after five minutes.
    • Persons with a second temperature check below 37.3 may proceed to class/work if no other symptoms are present.
    • Any person with a second temperature reading 37.3 degrees or higher will be required to leave campus,
      • A parent will be called and have an hour to pick up the student.
        • If the student is not picked up in an hour or the parent cannot be reached, CDC will be called to pick up the student
    • All medical data and treatment decisions shall be formally recorded and reported to relevant school personnel (e.g., Director, Principals, Office Secretaries, and relevant Teachers) and required government authorities.

Procedure for high temperature and symptoms during class

  • In the event of a suspected case during the school day within the classroom setting:
    • Classroom Teacher will inform Nurse
    • A Health Team (HT) member will come to the classroom to pick up the student
    • The HT member will use the identified exit door to escort the student to the back staircase and down to the on-campus Quarantine Tent.
    • The HT will communicate with the student’s parents.
    • Once the HT member (Nurse Jan) leaves the room with the suspected case:
      • Teacher and all remaining students will collect all things and proceed to the identified alternate classroom
      • Cleaners will be sent to the classroom to begin the disinfection process.
      • Class will continue in the alternate room until the disinfection process is finished.
        • The division Principal will inform the teacher when the classroom is ready for re-use.

QUARANTINE PROCEDURE

  • Persons with a second temperature check below 37.3 may proceed to class/work if no other symptoms are present.
  • Any person with a second temperature reading 37.3 degrees or higher will be required to leave campus and report to an official SEC Fever Clinic.
    • A parent will be called and will have an hour to pick up the student.
      • If the student is not picked up in an hour or the parent cannot be reached, CDC will be called to pick up the student
  • All medical data and treatment decisions shall be formally recorded and reported to relevant school personnel (e.g., Director, Principals, Office Secretaries, and relevant Teachers) and required government authorities.

GENERAL CLASSROOM AND CLEANING PROTOCOLS

Classrooms

  • Once students arrive in their classrooms, they must:
    • Continue to wear face mask/covering for the duration of the class (teachers will use their discretion when determining if students should remove their face mask/covering for certain limited activities).
    • Classrooms will be set up to allow for as much physical distancing as possible.
    • Prior to each class, students will be given time to disinfect and wipe down their desk/table/workstation/chair with approved disinfectant solution.
    • At the start of lessons and at each dismissal, students must sanitize their hands. Where possible bathrooms shall be used so as to enable thorough handwashing with soap and water using the seven-step method.
      • Students will only be allowed to enter the bathrooms one at a time to practice physical distancing.

School cleaners will thoroughly clean and disinfect all classrooms and classroom surfaces each morning and afternoon, and common spaces and surfaces (including door handles and railings) repeatedly throughout the day. Toilets and bathrooms will be cleaned hourly.

PE Class/Athletics Protocols

All PE classes will resume and students can expect to be physically active while still practicing Physical Distancing and the need to wear masks. Exceptions to this policy will be made by the PE teacher based on professional judgement according to activity level, weather, and social distancing within the activity and with respect to SEC guidelines.

After class, Upper School students will not be permitted to shower, but will be allowed to change clothes in the locker room based on a staggered release from class to continue practicing Physical Distancing in the locker room.

Recess

In addition to short breaks and passing times, students should wear their face mask/covering during recess. All play structures are off-limits and not to be used during the day.

Library

  • The library shall be closed for LS class visits. The librarian will visit LS classrooms in their respective homeroom classes.
  • High school study hall will continue to meet in the upper school library space as scheduled. All books will be disinfected upon return in accordance with government guidelines.

LUNCH AND CAFETERIA PROTOCOLS

All students and faculty/staff members will have their temperature checked prior to lunch. Procedure for fevers and COVID-19 symptoms during school hours shall apply. Students without fevers and/or COVID-19 symptoms will adhere to the following protocols:

  • At the assigned daily lunch time, students will proceed from homerooms to the cafeteria. The Cafe shall be closed to students.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own snacks during the school day since Illy will be closed.
  • Students shall wear a face mask/covering and maintain a distance of at least 1 meter between each other as they make their way into the cafeteria. There will be one line for the hand cleansing stations and for the food service.
  • Students will eat in available seating. Current capacity is 130 persons with plastic dividers with space to expand.
  • Students may not share food or utensils.
  • Cafeteria staff will issue students with a tray and utensils that have been sanitized
  • A new tray return location has been identified to maintain sanitation requirements and to assist with physical distancing.
  • Student will exit the cafeteria via the identified exit and will be expected to sanitize theirs hands upon exiting.

DISMISSAL PROTOCOLS

At the end of the school day:

  • Students across grade levels will have a staggered dismissal period during which they will walk directly from their classroom to their bus.
  • All students will proceed past the designated temperature check point, and must have a temperature below 37.3 to board the bus.
  • Students will go directly home and may not visit other locations or friends. All students will leave campus by 3:15.
  • Students may not congregate together or loiter in common areas, such as the cafe or hallways.
  • Students will practice physical distancing of at least 1 meter between each other. Students must sanitize their hands before boarding school buses.
  • Teachers/assistants will escort young students to designated buses, or to assigned pick-up location for parents, ayis, or private drivers.
  • All on-campus ASAs are suspended until further notice.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD GETS SICK OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL?

FEVER

If a student develops a fever outside of school hours, parents are to report symptoms to the school nurse via email (pd-nurse@scis-china.org) and follow up with a visit to the local fever clinic or the 24-hour emergency room of your preferred hospital (ex: Shanghai United).

 

The student can return to school:  

  • with a doctor’s report that clearly states the diagnosis and prescribed action;
  • when the student has been fever-free for 48 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication;
  • with approval from the campus nurse. 

 On the first day due back:

  • Students may not take the morning bus.
  • All individuals will meet the nurse at the isolation station for approval to enter with their QR code and completed Student Health Card for the day. 

 

VOMITING / DIARRHEA

If a student experiences vomiting and/or diarrhea outside of school hours, parents are to report symptoms to the school nurse via email (pd-nurse@scis-china.org) and follow up with a private doctor or at the 24-hour emergency room of your preferred hospital (ex: Shanghai United).

 

The student can return to school:  

  • with a doctor’s report that clearly states the diagnosis and prescribed action;
  • 72 hours after the last episode of vomiting and/or diarrhea;
  • with approval from the campus nurse. 

 On the first day due back:

  • Students may not take the morning bus.
  • All individuals will meet the nurse at the isolation station for approval to enter with their QR code and completed Student Health Card for the day.
