Final IB Results

Dear parents of seniors,

It was great to see everyone at grad last week and many of you and the graduates at the boat party as well. It has been an eventful two years for the students as they navigated the many demands of classes and activities and I am sure they are all looking forward to more challenges and opportunities as they head off to university.

We are also pleased to share with you photos from our SCIS-Pudong graduation. Over 450 full-sized photos have been placed on our school’s SCIS-Pudong media server, which can be accessed through the following link:Graduation Photos 2016All photos can then be viewed and downloaded to your personal computer.

There is, of course, one remaining senior event to look forward to, the release of their IB results.  IB results will become available to students July 6, 2016. Seniors have been given log in information for accessing their results.

IB will send results to universities based on the information we have provided. The actual hard copies of IB diplomas will be sent here to the school, usually arriving sometime in late August. Parents can expect a message from the school once these arrive so that delivery or pick up can be arranged.

Any questions regarding results that arise on or after July 6 can be directed to me via email (dmacmillan@scis-his.org). As you know, I will not be returning next year, but this email address will remain live until the end of July and I will be happy to handle any issues until then. If questions arise in August or later, these can be directed to the new school administration by contacting Julia Qian (jqian@scis-his.org).

It has been an absolute pleasure working with your children. They are a wonderful group of students and all have earned bright futures!

Regards,

Don

May 2 IB Exam Details for Seniors

Dear parents of IB students,

As you know, IB exams begin Monday, May 2. As this is a national holiday, we need to make some special arrangements for our IB students. There are two groups of students to consider:

Students enrolled in either English A or English B

This group includes all of our senior IB students. They all write their first exam beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning. Those not in Economics (see below) will then be able to take busses home at 10:45, after the exam has finished.

Students enrolled in Economics

Thirteen students are in this group. They will write their English exam in the morning with everyone else and then stay to write their Economics exam beginning at 12:00 noon. Lunch will be provided (pizza and snacks such as fruit, granola bars and nuts – students are also welcome to bring any food they like for themselves). These students will be able to take busses home at 1:45, after the Economics exam has finished.

Transportation to the school for all has been arranged as below. Note that these are the ASA pickup locations. Please review with your child to ensure clarity and let me know of any questions. This list has been given to seniors and they can also see Mr. Ren with any questions over the next two days.

One last note – it is important that all students are on campus well before the exam start time at 8:30. I am asking students to be here no later than 8:00. Those on the busses as below should be fine. If you plan on alternative transportation for your child, please ensure the same. If any transportation problems arise (missed the bus, can’t find the bus or other), please immediately contact me at 13472719002.

Thanks and regards,

Don

Note to Parents of Seniors

21 April 2016

Dear parents of seniors,

IB exams and graduation are approaching quickly and Ms. Kelly and I met this week with seniors to discuss. Important information related to these two events follows:

Exam Information

Seniors write their IB exams from May 2 through May 20. Remember that May 2 is a holiday, but exams will run regardless. Transportation and lunch will be provided for IB students that day. The exam schedule has been posted on the school IB website (link at pd.scis-his.net), posted in the school hallways and has been given to seniors. Seniors writing non-IB exams should be sure to consult with their teachers as to the time and place when these will be written.

Classes for senior IB students will be finished as of Friday, April 29. During the exam period, seniors, unless told otherwise, are only required to be on campus for their exam sessions. Note that they should be sure to arrive at the exam room 15 minutes prior to the start of each exam.

Seniors who would like assistance from their teachers for upcoming exams should contact them to set appropriate times. IB teachers will be teaching non-IB classes in May and will also have exam proctoring responsibilities over the course of the month.

Seniors are reminded that they are expected to be following dress code while on campus.

Graduation Update

Caps and gowns photos will be taken on Wednesday, April 27. Photos will be taken by school staff and the files will be available to seniors on the school media server.

Seniors will conduct their mock interviews May 23 through 30. The schedule has been posted in the hallway. Students have been preparing for these in advisory, creating resumes and cover letters in support of a mock job application, for which they will be interviewed by school staff. This process is intended to help students prepare for when they apply for positions after leaving SCIS.

Graduation rehearsal is at 8:30 on June 6, the day prior to the graduation ceremony. All seniors must attend this rehearsal. Also, Maja Kelly, the college counsellor, is organizing a senior week prior to graduation, where seniors will participate in a series of activities designed to help them transition to university life. Schedules for this and for graduation day itself will be provided to seniors later in May.

Remember that graduation takes place from 4:00 to 5:30 on Tuesday, June 7 in the theatre. All are welcome to this celebration!

Regards,

Don

Seniors Grad and IB Update

Dear parents of seniors,

Graduation for our seniors is fast approaching! See below for some updates.

IB

Students completed mock exams earlier this month. These were intended to give students a feel for the exam conditions they can expect in May, allow them to get a sense of how well prepared they are in their courses and provide the same information for teachers as well.

IB exams themselves take place from May 2 (this is a school holiday but IB exams will be held regardless) through May 20. Students have been given individual exam schedules and the general exam schedule is linked below. Seniors writing any non-IB exams will consult with their teachers as to the time and place these will be written.

Written assignments for group 1 and group 2 languages as well as Extended Essays and TOK essays have all been completed and submitted to IB. Internal assessments for most classes will be completed by the end of this month, with grades and samples submitted to IB in early April.

By the time we return from spring break, then, most assessment items will be finished and most new teaching will be complete. The focus in classes will move to reviewing for the May exams though, of course, students can and should be regularly reviewing already when they have time.

After Exams

As noted in a previous message, all seniors will participate in senior interviews after IB exams end. Along with interviews, seniors will have other responsibilities in the time between the end of exams and graduation. Senior Week will take place just prior to grad. During this time, our college counsellor, Maja Kelly, will work with seniors to help prepare them for some of the non-academic challenges they will face as they move from home to college. Also during this week, all seniors will be expected to participate in the graduation rehearsal, which will take place Monday, June 6.

Graduation

Students have been measured for caps and gowns and these are now on campus. We will take individual and group cap and gown photos here as the weather cooperates, as these are traditionally done outside. These will be made available to all on our media server once done.

Invitations have arrived and ten will be given to each senior in advisory this week. Invitations are not required to attend graduation, as it is an event open to the entire school community. However, seniors can use these to invite family members or other special people in their lives. Any senior who requires more than ten invitations can request these from Jelly at the front desk.

We will be meeting with seniors and sending messages home periodically to keep everyone apprised of plans as we a move forward.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to ask any questions that arise.

Regards,

Don

Note to Parents of Seniors – Student Interviews

Dear parents of seniors,

Parents of Middle snd High school students received a letter this week regarding student led parent conferences. Note that we are planning a variation on this theme for our senior students. They will be leaving SCIS soon and it will not be long before they will encounter interview situations for work or school. We want our seniors to be able to present themselves as professionally as possible when in interviews and so have modified their student led conference to help achieve this goal.

The seniors have been working in advisory to create a portfolio that includes items such as a well-designed resume, evidence of notable achievements and other documents that would support their work or school applications. They are identifying business areas of interest, creating cover letters of application and noting possible questions they could encounter in an interview, both in general and specific to their industry.

The final step is the interview itself. These will take place in the weeks following the completion of IB exams and will be conducted by school administrators or other personnel. Students will be asked to dress the part and we will do our best to emulate a true interview situation for them. Note that this means that parents of seniors are not required to attend student led conferences.

Students will, under the guidance of their advisors, finalize their plans over the next two months. Please let us know of any questions or comments as we move towards the interview dates.

Thanks and regards,

Don Macmillan

Note to Parents of Juniors

Dear parents of eleventh grade students,

It was good to welcome everyone back to school today after the winter break. See below for some notes regarding first year IB students as we begin the second semester.

ManageBac

All IB students and their parents are registered with ManageBac, which is linked on our school website (pd.scis-his.net). ManageBac allows teachers to communicate with and provide documents to students. Students have access to a calendar where major assessments and deadlines are posted. Students can also upload assignments through ManageBac, which is linked to Turnitin, a site which checks for authenticity. The EE coordinator and supervisors, the CAS coordinator and most of the classroom teachers use ManageBac extensively.

 Extended Essay

As mentioned in an earlier message, the Extended Essay (EE) is a 4000 word research paper that students complete under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. This will be submitted in the second year of the program (December 2016). Mrs. Miles is the EE coordinator and she will be leading the students through the process of successfully completing their essays over the coming months. Students began considering topics near the end of last semester, will be finalizing supervisors the next few weeks and then working with them on writing a research question. Note that students (and parents) can follow their EE progress through their ManageBac accounts.

Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)

Remember that successful completion of CAS is an IB and graduation requirement at SCIS. Ty Smeins is the CAS coordinator, guiding students in meeting CAS requirements through their after school activities. CAS progress can be monitored through ManageBac and through communication with Mr. Smeins (tsmeins@scis-his.org).

Exams

Parents are reminded that eleventh grade students do not sit IB exams until the second semester of twelfth grade. Students will write teacher created exams during the exam session this June as they have in past years.

College Applications

Maja Kelly, the college counselor, met several times with eleventh grade students in advisory last semester to begin working towards the college application process that students will begin in their senior year. Students have been introduced to Naviance, an application management system, and guidance regarding applying for universities will continue to be discussed. Please contact Maja (mkelly@scis-his.org) with questions at any time.

Study Hall and Office Hours

It is very important that students utilize good time management, including effective use of study hall, in order to achieve success in our demanding high school program. It is also very helpful for students to visit teachers during their office hours to ask questions and get additional assistance with their work. The start of the second semester is a good time for parents to help students to reflect on their efforts in these areas.

As always, never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Don Macmillan

Senior Update

Dear parents of seniors,

This is the first of what will be several notes regarding seniors as they continue down the road to graduation. With less than six months to go, this is an exciting time for our future graduates!

Academic Information

Mock exams will take place beginning February 17. These will contribute to second semester grades for students and provide an opportunity for students to experience exam conditions as they will in May. Extended essays should now be complete and will soon be sent to IB examiners. As we progress through the semester, seniors will be completing their courses and then preparing for IB exams, which run from May 2 (this is a school holidy but IB exams will be held regardless) through May 20. The general exam schedule is posted below, is posted in the school hallways and has been given to seniors. A schedule with specific times will be posted later. Seniors writing non-IB exams will consult with their teachers as to the time and place when these will be written.

Student Led Parent Conferences

As in the past, seniors will not be conducting student led conferences. Instead, they will engage in a simulated interview situation with school staff. Resumes are being drafted, cover letters of application are being written and interviews will be scheduled for the time after IB exams are complete, towards the end of May. There is, therefore, no need for parents of seniors to attend student led parent conferences in March.

Senior Week

Along with interviews, seniors will have other responsibilities in the time between the end of exams and graduation. Senior Week will take place just prior to grad. During this time, our college counsellor, Maja Kelly, will work with seniors to help prepare them for some of the non-academic challenges they will face as they move from home to college. Also during this week, all seniors will be expected to participate in the graduation rehearsal.

Graduation

Seniors will be fitted for caps and gowns soon and, once these arrive, we will arrange for pictures to be taken by school staff. These will be posted on the school media server, linked on our website, for parents and students to download as they please.

Graduation invitations will be printed and given to each senior. Invitations are not necessary to attend grad, as everyone in the school community is welcome, but these can be used to invite those special people in the seniors’ lives.

Remember that graduation takes place from 4:00 to 5:30 on Tuesday, June 7 in the theatre. All are welcome to this celebration!

Please let me know of any questions. You can expect further updates from me as we get closer to the event.

Regards

Don

IB Course Selections for Next School Year

Dear parents of tenth grade students,

Tenth grade students met with me during advisory today to begin the course selection process for next school year. As at the parent meeting a couple of weeks ago, I introduced the students to the structure of the IB program and discussed how we will proceed with choosing IB classes. This begins with the students bringing to you the school’s IB handbook and a form on which they can indicate their tentative course selections for 2016/17. I ask that you review this information with your child this week so that the form can be returned to me, an advisor or to the front office by Friday.

It is important to remember that this is just the start of the process. We will collect the course selection forms from students and then Ms. Kelly and I will meet with each student individually next semester to review choices and make revisions. Parents will be kept informed throughout the process and, of course, are welcome and encouraged to meet with us as well. The goal is that each student has an appropriate course of study in place by June, reflective of each student’s strengths, college aspirations and possible future careers.

Links to today’s presentation, the most recent IB handbook and the course selection form can be found below. As always, please let me know of any questions or comments.

Thanks and regards,

Don
